Meet Our Marketing Specialist, Matt Buys!
1. What’s your job title at ServiceCore?
2. Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Where you’re from: I’m from Coldwater, Michigan. It’s in a rural area in southern Michigan with lots of farmland.
Where you went to school: I went to Michigan State University, which was about an hour drive from where I grew up. I majored in journalism and got my degree in 2003.
Anything about your family, pets, etc: I have lots of family scattered around Michigan and Vermont, where my mom is originally from. My wife and I are fortunate to have her big family close to us here in Louisiana. We’ve got two cats at home.
3. What brought you to Louisiana?
I had visited New Orleans on a few occasions and had a great time. I wanted to see what it would be like to live here. It’s been 7 years now and I have no regrets.
4. Favorite thing about Louisiana?
Definitely the food. My wife’s family has cajun and Vietnamese roots. Both cultures have incredible food traditions, and both are well represented in restaurants around southern Louisiana.
5. What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?
I’m a big sports fan, and I still root for the teams from my home state of Michigan — Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, and the MSU Spartans.
6. What other hobbies do you enjoy?
Digital marketing is evolving so rapidly, I feel like reading up on the latest developments has become one of my biggest hobbies.
7. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done?
I moved around a lot in my twenties and early thirties. I lived in Denver, Chicago, Orlando, San Juan, and a few other places before settling in New Orleans. When I moved to Denver, I had never been there before, didn’t know anybody, and didn’t have any leads on jobs or places to live. Maybe that sounds crazy to some people, but back then it felt like a fun challenge to me.
8. Fun fact about yourself?
There’s another Matt Buys from my hometown of Coldwater, Michigan that isn’t related to me. It’s especially odd because Buys is an uncommon last name and Coldwater is a small town. Apparently he’s a very good bowler and has his (MY!) name listed on all-time high score leaderboards at local bowling alleys. So far I haven’t been able to wrangle any free bowling or perks by flashing my ID.
